Does the self-installing car seat’s carry handle need to be in a specific position when used in the vehicle?
Yes, we recommend that the carry handle be in the carry position when used in the vehicle.
How do I select the correct vehicle seat position to install my self-installing car seat?
Please refer to both the self-installing car seat instruction manual and your vehicle owner’s manual to determine which vehicle seat position is correct for both your vehicle and the self-installing car seat. You can also use the 4moms app to scan your vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for correct vehicle seat positions for LATCH installation.
What is the best seat position to install the self-installing car seat?
The best seat position is one that:
- Is recommended by the vehicle owner’s manual
- Results in secure installation of the car seat
- Is a compatible LATCH position or has a compatible vehicle belt system
Can the self-installing car seat be installed using the LATCH system in the rear center seating position borrowing the lower anchors of the outboard seating positions?
The self-installing car seat can be used in a seating position with 11 – 16 inches of space between LATCH anchors, if the vehicle manufacturer allows. Please check your vehicle owner’s manual.
Can I use both the LATCH system AND the vehicle seat belt to install the infant car seat?
No, the self-installing car seat can only be installed with EITHER the LATCH system OR the vehicle seat belt.
Can I use an inflatable seat belt to install my self-installing car seat?
The self-installing car seat is not approved for use with inflatable seat belts.
I am installing the self-installing car seat manually and require the use of a locking clip. How do I get one?

When installed, can the back of the carrier touch the seat in front of it?
We recommend that the carrier does not touch the vehicle seat in front of it. The front vehicle seat(s) should be moved forward until they are not in contact with the back of the carrier.
What happens if the car seat is unable to complete a diagnostic check or safely install the seat? Will the parent receive an alert?
If the car seat cannot complete the auto installation for any reason the parent will receive a notification along with instructions on how to fix the error. In the unlikely event that the auto installation cannot be completed, a manual installation may always be completed.
How will I know if the base of my self-installing car seat is properly installed?
The 4moms self-installing car seat verifies correct installation at the end of the installation process. You can also push the button on the base to verify correct installation. It also continuously monitors the car seat’s status and will alert you if something is amiss and walk you through how to correct it.
Can the 4moms self-installing car seat be installed manually without power?
Yes, the 4moms self-installing car seat can be installed manually like any other car seat, methods include:
- Base installation via LATCH connectors (watch video)
- Base installation via lap and/or shoulder belt (watch video)
- Carrier only installation via European belt path routing (watch video)
How far can the self-installing car seat base overhang the vehicle seat?
No more than 1/3 of the car seat base can overhang the vehicle seat.
Can I install the self-installing car seat next to a side air bag?
The self-installing can be installed in vehicles equipped with side air bags. However, you should check your vehicle owner’s manual for information regarding car seat use near side air bags.
Can I use a pool noodle or rolled towel when manually installing the car seat base or carrier?
Both the carrier and base were designed such that a pool noodle or rolled towel are not necessary when manually installing the car seat base or carrier. Therefore, we do NOT permit the use of pool noodles or rolled towels for manual installations.
